lyrics

December 7th, 1941, a surprise attack under the morning sun. Nihonjin attempts to neutralise world superpower number one. Hawaii hit by two pummelling waves of unrelenting bombardment – 2403 dead, a sharp slap in the face from the oil-hungry West. ”Air raid pearl harbour, this is not a drill”, ”away fire and rescue party”, “all hands on deck we’re being bombed” – so begins a bloody Pacific war. Early August 1945, the war in Europe is all but won, but the old superpower’s been itching to try out its new bomb. Enola Gay drops ‘Little Boy’, Hiroshima's turned to dust – 140,000 dead with no clear warning given beforehand. Days later ‘Fat Man’ falls, obliterating 72,000 in Nagasaki – were these blows necessary evil or revenge-fuelled crimes against humanity? September 11th, 2001, another attack on American soil, the twin towers of New York City brought crashing to the ground. The Pentagon also hit, a fourth target never met – 2992 dead, a kick in the teeth from a known terrorist threat. That day their “nation saw evil, the very worst of human nature”, yet vowed to “defend freedom”, “and all that is good and just in our world”. The period from that point on marked the dawn of a new era – explosions, deaths and atrocious crimes, justified by “the war on terror”. Afghanistan first on the list, in desperate search of the illusive Osama. His alleged co-conspirators caught and shipped off to rot in Guantanamo. Iraq the next port of call, Saddam eventually captured and brought to trial. Death squads now roam the streets, another corrupt force put in power. Both countries still trapped in turmoil, allied troops still stuck out there, too many have and will die from the orders of revenge-fuelled leaders.
